On the heels of news that the UK version of RuPaul’s Drag Race will be coming to BBC3 next year, comes a Drag Race Christmas Special.
No matter how much of a die hard Drag Race fan you are, it will leave you at best bemused. The show has always been full of product placement and used to push RuPaul’s latest albums and products, but this Christmas Special took it to a whole other level. There was the usual makeup company name drop, but then there were a myriad of new products including fans thrown in, and then there was half of RuPaul’s new Christmas album being sung constantly.
The whole thing was just saccharin. Everyone got on, there were no cat fights, they had random cut aways with the queens singing badly, everyone won, Michelle Visage was nice. It’s all wrong, it’s like you’re watching something from a reversed reality. The whole point of drag race is to be affirmative, but it works because of the drama between the characters, take that away and you just have nothing, as this proved.
Skip this one, it’s like the embarrassing uncle on Christmas Day that everyone prefers to pretend isn’t there. I’m pretty sure that just as the first series of Drag Race has disappeared into the realms of mythology due to it’s awful styling, this one will join it in the bin, only alluded to as a bad joke.
