There may be seven Balans Soho Society venues, including two cafes, but the Soho location, just down from one of the cafes, is, for my money, the best. Open from 7.30am to 5 or 6am (depending on the day) on the following day, it is the perfect place to get a great meal any time of the day, and the staff are always friendly.
Given its opening times, it’s become quite the haunt for those after a last drink and some eggs in the early hours to help them round off the night before collapsing into bed. Don’t let this put you off; it’s not a drunken rabble, but a merry crowd.
While the breakfast and brunch have acquired a legendary status, so too has their burger, to the point that it’s named The Infamous Balans Burger. It’s a brioche bun encasing a large juicy perfectly cooked burger with cheese, bacon, pickle and the usual trappings with a side of large yet light fluffy and crispy double dipped chips. Oh, and its served up with a steak knife skewered through the centre so you have something appropriate to cut it in half with – it’s too unwieldy not to.
If you think you need a starter before such a burger then try the Korean bbq chicken wings with kimchi, peanuts and sesame. They are large, succulent, and the perfect way to wet your appetite.
A nice addition is the membership card that you get with your bill on your first visit; this allows you to sign up and get offers, including discounted tickets to shows.
